I posted this question on another thread (one with a Brentrup 3-pointer)...got no responses so I thought I'd try again here.
Mr. Brentrup's scroll looks like the one on this thread:
Brentrup classic (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=23193)
There appear to have been at least 2 different types of scroll carving on 3-point F4's...the following are from the Mnadolin Archives..
One where the carving trails back toward the fingerboard (see #4259 (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/show_mando.pl?3108), #6262 (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/show_mando.pl?2818)) both of which where made prior to 1910.
Then there's a few (#8827 (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/show_mando.pl?1519), #8855 (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/show_mando.pl?2924), #10322 (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/show_mando.pl?787)) that have a similar scroll to the one we see on F5's today. I'm putting 2+2 together and dating these after 1909 but before 1912 as #6262 is from 1909 and #10322 is from 1911.
Ok, so you say they made a change somewhere around 1909 on F4 scrolls but then look at #13100 (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/show_mando.pl?2593) from 1912 and it's back to the pre-1910 style scroll...
These are all 3-point F4's and what got me looking was that I was thinking about building an F4 and wanted to see some finish and binding examples....
Anyone have any knowledge of this?
Thanks,
Rob
