I have an 80's model Kentucky KM-1000 and am looking to replace the cheap plastic truss rod cover with an ebony one. Not looking for anything fancy, just a simple ebony, bell shaped cover. Anyone have any ideas where I can get one. Already tried First Quality, doesn't look like they have one in their catalog.

Bill Nichols http://www.nicholsguitars.com/made my custom truss rod cover for me. He mainly does guitar truss rod covers but can do mandolin TRC's if you ask.

He is a nice guy and extremely talented and best of all, the prices are decent.

I wanted a TRC design that gave the appearance of extending the fern design on my headstock down to the nut. He matched the shell inlay color exactly and I am 100% happy.

Amazing Jim--were you able to get the job done via email with color photos? #Now that the process is complete, can he replicate the design without seeing my peghead(and would you minding my copying it)? #Really put the finishing touches on a beautiful peghead design.

I keep wanting to make or have one made for me in the shape of an arrowhead maybe in pearl or abalone. I used to collect lots of them when I lived in Kentucky and as a kid in Alabama, and have always loved the shapes that you can find. I think the arrowhead shape would lend itself well to the truss rod cover and I'm sure someone out there's already done it.

My old '84 KM1000 has I think Longer screw spacing than standard truss rod covers. I used to have a pearl one on it but I sold it. I never thought the pearl looked very good with the yellowed look to the inlay.

Yeah he did the job completely by e-mail and mail. I took close up digital photos of my headstock, traced the outline of my old cover on paper and scanned it and sent it to him via e-mail. I measured the distance between the screw holes so he could size it correctly.

He uses Adobe Photo Shop and he can send you pictures of what your TRC will look like on the headstock if you send him a digital picture of the headstock.

You can copy mine if you want I don't mind just be sure to get exact measurements between the screw holes because they are all slightly different.

I actually had my choice between two designs, one was the double scroll I chose and I could have chose a single scroll.

He will work with you. Check out his gallery, he can do anything on it or custom.

Just tell Bill you saw "jim_n_virginia's" TRC from the "Acoustic Guitar Forum" and I think he will remember me.

DUUUHHH!!! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I posted the digital photo I sent him and the Adobe enhanced mock up version he sent me back for approval!

Sorry! Here is the true before and after pictures. The lighting is different so the abalone looks slightly different but to the eye it matches perfectly!
