White golden gate large triangular pick kinda has a tan grain look to them. Any info and or anyone know where I can get em? I found one in an old guitar case and want some more. I like em.

I don't think golden gate makes ivoroid flatpicks anymore (I didn't know that they once did, either, until your post). Their ivoroid thumb picks are everywhere though.
You can duplicate the flatpicks by cutting them from sheet ivoroid material....or if you see a similar shell colored celluloid, pearloid, or clown barf pick that has the same shape and thickness it would probably be pretty close to what you're looking for (it's all celluloid).

I remember hearing about those picks, it seems like they were very good sounding picks. It seems like they'd be easy enough to make from celluloid sheet stock, and that appears to be what the folks at Greg Boyd have done (I've yet to try one of these but they look wonderful):

The GG ivoroid triangular picks were the successors to the Saga ivoroid 1.45mm triangular picks. Mike Compton used to use them. I had obtained a supply from Saga, but after some time, they disintegrated... split, crumbled.. really!!!

yeah, Compton gave me one of those years ago. Had a GG bridge on it. Don't know what happened to it.

There is a good discussion and several examples of triangle ivoroid picks here:
http://www.lutherie.net/picks.html
and it also talks about how to get sheet material for your own (cheaper than buying them for $7 a piece, unless you have a really high hourly rate).

Thanks for the info.....I may have to go buy one. I have had very little luck "making" my own.....I tend to not know when to stop and end up with pick dust all over my girlfriends couch.

I would like to have the GG but that may be asking too much.

I never had good results with grained ivoroid celluloid, it seemed to crumble or at least be noisier than other celluloids. What is the outline and thickness of the GG picks in question?

?used to make Dawg picks in ungrained white, and black,(have one of each, left) now all tortioid, I guess.

Which "Dawg" picks are you talking about? The ones that Saga sold years back with his signature on them? They came in different flavors.

Well, that image was cadged from my own website page at www.lutherie.net/picks.html. That's a 50 year-old D'Andrea #346 pick. But it's grained ivoroid alright. I never saw a Dawg pick made of that, but David had never seen one in clownbarf until he noticed one in my living room that I'd carefully set out to see if he'd notice (he did). Maybe there are some in ivoroid.

If you are interested in the material that's one thing. If you're interested in the shape and thickness and material, it comes in lots of colors, and from a playability standpoint they are all about alike. All the Saga picks had his signature on them until the contract expired, whereupon they put the Golden Gate Bridge logo on instead.

Here is one of my original Saga ivoroid picks, and one of the un-stamped blanks (seconds??) I was able to obtain as well.
The trio of old Dawgs for comparison.

That's the one Joel was looking for, I think. You can see the shape is different. They're all made by Pickboy in Japan. Saga imports them, but so do other people. Very cool!

Wish I could get that ivoroid in sheet form. The stuff I do get is from Delmar, and that comes from Italy. The Japanese stuff is harder. I am looking at a GG thumbpick right now that's made from the same stock.

I like the ruler!

Good one, right near where my friend Marc Silber used to have a shop called Fretted Instruments.

Joel,
I have about 18 of these ivoroid trianglar picks in new unused condition and even more slightly used which can be polished. I really liked them and bought a large supply indirectly from the Japanese distributor. These are labeled BLANTON. I've since gotten another mando and prefer a different pick for it. Consequently, I would like to sell the Blantons at my cost. Anyone intersted please email me at kreback@adelphia.net. My PC is going into the shop for a couple of days so please be patient if I don't reply immediately. - Ken

Here's my most useful rule:

http://www.lutherie.net/rule.100ths.jpg

Not too collectible or artful, but extremely useful for laying out odd fret scales quickly and accurately. Made by Starrett.

And here are two favorite picks, both made from heavy large triangles, but with the two corners I actually play the strings with rounded over:

http://www.lutherie.net/pk.lg.triangle.hvy.reshaped.jpg

These are 2/3 the way to being Dawg picks. I leave the one point alone so I have a little more surface area to grip! They are 1.23" wide and 1.28" long.

Ken---you have mail.

Evan-That GG is exactly what I am looking for. I am using the Clayton's as back-ups and they are not bad.

Aren't picks the coolest? I just love 'em... I wish I could have experienced the "pick tour."

Funny... Today I went through an old picnic basket of mine...filled with treasures of yesteryear... Behold! Two ancient picks... One, a "baby-blue" color, just the shape of that brown one on this post here... It says, "PURLOINED FROM MCCABES." The other is white, and well worn...all's I can make out is "HEAVY." Small treasures... I'm gunna send 'em to my mando-buddy...where they will be put to GREAT use! Senior "Valanche!!!" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The trouble with those old Saga ivoroid picks it that they really did disintegrate..
I took one to show Mike Compton; it crumbled like a cracker in my fingers....
I'll bet they would have burned real good also....

I'll settle for a digital pic if you could post one, but thank you for the generous offer...I'm just slightly tickled over the coincidence of seeing my surname associated with a pick...

I've had this image on my site for many years:

http://www.lutherie.net/pk_herco44.jpg

And one day a few months ago, I got an email from Viki McCabe, who started the shop with her ex-hsband back in the Fifties. She's living on Bainbridge Island now, but still has fond memories of her "baby" from way back when.

Yep... That's it. #Nice pick... #Sounds good... #(However, your picture looks green) whereas mine is blue... #also... the wording, "purloined..." is etched in white not black) on my vintage pick... Boy do I feel important havin' a cool 'ole pick! #Did I loose it yet? #(gulp.) # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

McCabe's always had (probably still does, but I haven't been down there in a couple of years) a bowl on the counter with a selection of purloinable picks of all colors. This one almost looks like glow-in-the-dark green, doesn't it? Over a million served, I'm sure.

I sent McCabe's Guitar Shop an email, and they are sending me a couple of their picks as I'm 400 miles away from their shop...okay, I didn't exactly purloin them myself...so sue me.

Just to add another triangular ivoroid pick with a grain go to this link of the German tonetoys shop: tonetoys Koto pick by Pickboy (Japan) (http://www.tonetoys.com/de/Koto.html)
These picks are very nice, but only available in medium.

Just had a look again: those Koto picks are available in soft (weich) and hard (hart) - I have a soft one.

Paul Hostetter
Mar-22-2005, 4:56pm
Made by Pickboy, the same outfit that makes the Golden Gates.

Invoking the word "koto" for these is rather odd, as you don't play a koto with a pick like this. Perhaps they meant Kyoto?

Is there a coin on both sides?

http://www.tonetoys.com/de/media/images/pb-kato-group.gif

It doesn't look like a real coin.

It looks from the pic that the coin is some kind of insert.
