Jim - any chance of encouraging you to come to Del Rossi's (Dublin, NH)? Seems like we never get you closer to us northern New Englanders than Hartford, CT. Msg. me or contact David and Elaina directly. I think in the past you may have turned it down for financial reasons, but you have devoted bluegrass and FWB fans here, and we can promote it. Otherwise maybe I can get a bigger venue with enough advance notice. I just need to know the details of what $ you require.

are you comming (deep) south any?

Well, where at? We need your help to find these venues.

We like to play concert environments as opposed to
festivals. #Frank feels better in this environment. #
What we look for is a club that can offer a guarantee,
a deposit, and a percentage of the door. The venue
should hold between 150 and 500 people with a
ticket price of between $16 and $22
and have a strong Bluegrass base.

How about eastern North Carolina? (or at the very least, Raleigh)? We just had Jimmy Gaudreau and Orrin Starr in Williamston. Good turnout.

have you guys contacted the boston bluegrass union?
Yes, but the BBU doesn't have shows in July
and don't have access to a hall in November.
Maybe someday we will connect with them.

I am still looking for venues on the east
that I might not have found yet.

Well, we had a great time and met lots of great
Bluegrass fans in Seattle, Lyons, Durango and
of course in Berkeley CA. #It was a little hard
to breath up in Durango, but we had a great time. #
Of course I almost went blind using Safeway
eye drops, and then caught the flu back in
California... #but it was a great adventure. #

We are now hoping to find a few shows on the east coast
that we missed out on last November. #As soon as I can
recover from the flu I will get on the phone and try
to find the promoters. #We will be in upstate NY on
July 26th for sure. #

And a big thanks to everyone who helped make this
tour possible.

Just for the record - what strings does Frank Wakefield use on his Loar?

Something like THIS (http://www.elderly.com/accessories/items/G167ML.htm)? I'm trying everything I can think of to get my mandolin to sound like his. Now, what pick?

Its all in your right hand, how you hold your
pick and how you use your wrist. #There is the
left hand and how hard he presses his fingers
down on the strings. #Listen to Sleeping Lady
for example, his frets were shot on that album
and it made no difference to his sound, think
about that. # We talk about this in one of the
interviews on: #
http://www.candlewater.com/interviews/

The right hand is demonstrated in the Ultra Clear DVD-R #1.
http://www.candlewater.com/BlueberryRecords/FWDVDSeries/
He describes his pick there too. #I seem to remember
that it is a Dunlop 1mm, but read the interviews or get the DVD to be sure. #
If you have DSL then look at any close ups you
might find on the Adventures In Bluegrass II or III movies
which can be found here: #
http://www.candlewater.com/
He also has a special bridge that he made and a Lloyd Loar, if
that matters, however, how many people can get Frank or Monroe's
tone when playing that instrument? #

The most powerful thing I learned from Kenny Baker
all those years at his farm was how to use the bow to
effortlessly grab notes in a way that #"Opened Up" the
violin by using my bow wrist and fingers. #What Frank is
doing is exactly the same, we have talked about it.

Think right hand and wrist first it is cheaper
than a 1923 Loar at this point. #Get the technique
down, then sell the house and buy a Loar later.

Mr. Moss - Thanks for the discussion. I really did enjoy your show several months ago and I'm embarrassed to say, new little about the band prior to that night in Richmond, VA. I have long felt that the music and the tone is in the right hand. And, I have no intention on selling the house for my next (or any) mandolin - ha.

Jim,
Where will you be in upsate NY July 26th?

By the way RIT (Rochester Institue of Technology) where I teach has a great new indoor field house and is booking bands check out RIT's web site to get a look at the field house.

We had Dylan and his band there in the fall and AK & Union Station is coming in May.

Can you send me a contact email address or web site URL?
It sounds like you have a better understanding of the
RIT site than I do and can get me to the right people.

What about Renfro Valley (Berea/Mt. Vernon,KY - my neck of the woods). Or am I too far behind the times. It is concert seating and about the price range you are talking, actually, you should get more than the up to $22.

On another note, I have been suspecting that the right hand has more to do with what's going on than the left. I don't post my pinky, I read that here. Thanks, guys and gals, for the early intervention.

I still do too many downstrokes.
