Hi,

I saw the information here about the great price on the A-style hardshell case at Musician's Friend http://www.musiciansfriend.com (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/)
and I ordered it. I am very pleased with their service, my order arrived in less than a week and s&h was only $5.95. The case is very nice but the body of the case is deeper than my mando or else the support under the neck is too high. When it is in the case I am afraid this will put pressure on the neck and warp it. I was thinking I could cut a piece of foam rubber and cover it with felt to bring the body up to the point where the neck is level. What do you all think http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

CarmiJo,
I don't know about your possible correction to the case, but I did not notice the height difference and the case bent
my johnson a model's neck. #I have since replaced it with a f style, but that A was my first mandolin.

I bought a unusual sized GWW case for a Flatiron 1N. It fit perfectly around the body of the Mando but it was a bit too deep. I removed the neck support and cut down the 2 plywood ends. There are two plywood ends that have covering on them and a lid or top for this storage compartment. Once I cut down or shortened the two ends with a saw, I re-glued the covering back on the plywood. I set the ends back in the case and used Brass screws to attach the pieces to the case. These two pieces are probably stapled in and of course you had to remove them to do this job. As a result. the Mando rests in the case perfectly level.

You could also make a pad for the body to bring it up so it will be level in the case. A folded towel or something would probably do the trick. You could also find some padding material at a hobby/craft store and use that. If you go that route, you may want to make a cover for the padding as the padding material could negatively interact with the finish on the instrument.

Good Luck!

I ordered that same case from Musician's Friend for my Parsons Flat-top several months ago and had the same problem. I did the same thing you are thinking about doing. I took a piece of 1/2" foam rubber, and cut it to fit the case. I also got some spray glue and a piece of felt from a hobby store. I laid the felt on a flat surface and sprayed a light coating of the glue on it. Then I pressed the foam rubber onto the felt and wrapped the excess felt around the edges of the foam rubber. When the gule dried, I took a scissors and trimmed the excess felt. The assembly "friction fits" in my case and makes the mando fit level in the case at just the right height.

I still had two other problems: The mando body was too short for the body of the case, so it was free to slide back and forth about a 1/2". I solved this by re-cycling one of those long, flat pads from an old computer case. I fit that in behind the tailpiece. Also, I noticed the neck supports had no "indent" to keep the neck from sliding side to side. I took two pieces of wood quarter-round, rolled them up in a couple of wraps of felt and stapled them in place through the underside of the accessory compartment lid and now I have a nearly perfect fit all the way around. It's not pretty, but very much OK for what is essentially my "beater" mando.

I got a johnson (ah, jon-san?) litefoam hardcase, and added eggcrate foam in the cavity under the body, my A shaped electric uses that one, room for cable under the foam, in a fleece bag, so foam is covered .
