I read the tutorial on the site and tried tuning my mandolin and ended up breaking a string so just wondering if anyone could confirm a few things when tuning.

I do have an electric tuner and mainly play bass so just taking up the mandoli.

Firstly its tued EE / AA / DD /GG 8 strings right ?

Its tuned from low E to high G or High E to low G cause I've read its tuned High E to low G which doesn't seem posbile on my mandolin.

When trying to tune to some of these nots I either found the tension far to tight or the string far to loose.. I realise I may need a new set of strings due to the fact this thing hasn't been played in years but would be greatful for some input before I start restringing

Thanks

Paul

The low string is tuned to G. The high E is the same as a guitar's high E played at the 12th fret. The low G is the same as the G string on a guitar.

When I'm putting new strings on, I try to bring the high E up to pitch slowly, as these strings are prone to break.
