My wife & I went to the exhibit last Sunday at the Art Museum in Philly.....
Interesting character, that Dali was!
I was very excited to see mandolins in a few of his works..One his painting titles had "Mandolin" in it too!
I highly(!) reccommend this exhibit if you like Dali's work at all..
I have previously been to the Dali museum in St. Petersburg, Florida... That was a crazy day!
Eric
Thanks for the heads up, Eric. I have tickets for sometime in March. I've been a Dali fan since I was a kid.

What Dali works have mandolins in them? I have always liked his stuff, but haven't seen any with mandos. I might like to buy a print of one.

Mandolins, lutes, etc. have been common in still lifes in most post rennaissance art movements. But their presence in late 19th and 20th Century art still lifes reflects its popularity as a home instrument at that time. Even if a mandolin is unplayable it is an interesting object just to look at and I suspect it can still be found in still lifes in many art schools. I think you would have a hard time finding a 20th Century artist who never drew or painted a mandolin. It is one of those traditions which seems to go on whether mando playing is popular or not.
Believe it or not, Dali did an album cover for Jackie Gleason (he conducted an orchestra that was mando heavy) that has a mando featured on it .......I have one framed and hanging over the chair I sit and play in. #I'm at work right now and I don't recall the name of the album, but if anyone wants the info, I can get back to you on Monday.
It is pretty cool.

Alan:
That pic of "Portrait of Juan de Pareja Repairing a String of His Mandolin" is very cool! That's about what it looked/felt like the last time I broke a string at a gig! I gotta get a print of that.

Paul, do you know if anyone has seen the instrument this old engraving was of? I have a print of the "guitarpa"? that was supposedly exhibited in London back in the 1880s. I find the stand nearly as interesting as the instrument.

My business logo for (ulp) 35 years has been an image lifted from a "Suite of Erotic Prints" by Dali. I'm not sure what's erotic about it, or much else in the folio. It's on my card and all over my website. It's an actual old advertising lithograph that Dali had his way with:

I saw that Gleason album at the Berkeley flea awhile back but the seller had left it in direct sun long enough to ruin the record itself. He wanted $50 for it all the same, and I admired the cover and left it to bake. Those guys were birds of a feather.

I've never seen the actual instrument, nor have I ever heard anyone say they have, but I sure have seen images of it, sans Dali, floating around for years. Seems fairly obvious Orville Gibson saw it too, doncha think?
love the dali portrait. been looking on line, but can't find anywhere to buy a poster/print......:(
