I don't know wether you plan on singing or not and although this one has some pretty high notes, you could always go for Sweet Afton by Nickel Creek. It has a really nice mandolin part to it and should be quite easy to pick up.
Best of luck in wooing your lady http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Well, this has got to melt her heart:
"Pig In A Pen"
I got a pig at home in a pen
Corn to feed 'im on
All I need's a pretty little girl
To feed 'im when I'm gone

When I was playing Westphalia Waltz the other evening, my wife commented on what a pretty piece she thought it was. She rarely makes any comments about my picking.

I have worked up "midnight on the water" from the mandolin pickers fakebook and it's real nice.

When I start playing "A Place In The Heart" My wife will stop everything just to listen, which is very surprising because my playing suck's! Check out the mp3 page on the CAFE. For a track recorded by Scott T.

if you don't sing ( I shouldn't) try this one
"idillo Primaverile" it's an old neopolitan number. it can swoon a gal within the first few notes I reckon. Give it a whirl.

I think an instrumental version of "When You Say Nothing At All" would be lovely. If you're going to sing "Alone With You" which I think was recorded by Faron Young could be reworked. Maybe even rework something from some romantic musical (or Disney movie) for mando. Those always have great love themes.

"Dark Eyes" in Orr's Anthology of Mandolin Music, also "La Paloma"
"Only a thought away" by Blue Highway - I asked my wife to marry me after singing her that one with very good results!

Sweet Afton...Hmmm. I read the Nickel Creek book and I could swear that song is about his deceased lover!? The main message in the song is describing scenery, flowers, snow, around "Marry's" cot where she RESIDES. He goes to see her every day at noon and he's asking the river "sweet Afton" not to ever disturb her sleep. I'm not so sure that would be a good one, but definetely a pretty song. "Annie's song" is a nice one that I like, fairly easy too. You could rename it "__" song! Try not to do "To All The Girls I've Loved Before," even though it is a nice slow one!
A second vote for Scott's recording on the MP3's "A place in the Heart" no Woman can resist this tune. Its not especially difficult but, a lovely, romantic tune. Scott does an excellent job with it to boot. Love that Nugget D string.

Check "Adios a Ocumare" under "Venezuelan" in the tabs here. The poster used some notation that makes the times hard to followk, but it's a very pretty tune. Latin romantic!

hey John S Chicago
I got a pig at home in a pen
Corn to feed 'im on
All I need's a pretty little girl
To feed 'im when I'm gone
Isn't that from the Non garcia/grisman version of Shady Grove, only with 'horse' in lieu of 'pig'?

I just had to hear "A Place in the Heart" and as I started it and picked along my wife came in, listened and commented how beautiful it was. Gets my vote

People like a old bluesy old love song that I do; 'Since I Met You Baby' by Ivory Joe Hunter. I found the chords and lyrics at Harmony Central (Olga). It is good for both singing and picking.
If I could do things at once, (I can't) it would sound great on harmonica with chording the mando. -
Hey that could be a good topic - who plays mando and harmonica and who can do them simultaneously.

If you sing you can't go wrong with "Never Ending Song of Love." I've got from Rice, Rice, Hillman, Pedersen in A. It's pretty easy, it's fun, and it works for me everytime she says, "why can't you sing something sweet?"

MrScrubas: Some versions of "Shady Grove" have the same melody as "Pig in a Pen". You could very easily use lyrics from one in the other. I have some fun sometimes crossing the lyrics and making up some new ones off the top of my head (just talk about trains, fellers, gingam or the like and mean it about someone's life if not your own and it works).
Speaking of, some of the Irish-American versions of "Shady Grove" might work. Ofcourse, that's only if you wanna marry this person one day. "Shady grove my little love/ Shady grove I say/ Shady grove my little love/ Gonna' marry you some day." Atleast, I THINK that's an Irish-American version 'cause that's the way it sounded every time I heard it with those words.

How about the love song Chris Thile wrote in the 50s? You'll need a mandocello backup.
