I couldn't comment on Darren's OP,because i haven't heard the new CD,but i'll chime in & say that at his best Peter Rowan has one of the top 3 voices...

I think back on Pete Rowan and some of his best songs and singing was with his brothers on the 3 LPs they did together. Hard to beat that natural...

I'd suggest strongly that you ignore the Fender mandolin. Without question they are among the worst tone-wise IMHO. Great suggestions above,though ....
