Description:

This is an incredible mandolin built by master builder Johnny Hutto in 1982. It is a Gibson copy flower pot that was custom ordered and the specs are recorded in the journal that belonged to Mr. Hutto which is kept now by his son. It is number 62. The mandolin was originally ordered with block inlays and a deep maroon to black sunburst. In 2008, I had Chris Stanley refinish and varnish the mandolin as there were some checks and chipping in the original finish that was very thick laquer. I had Chris replace the fingerboard with a slightly arched ebony board with dots. When we stripped the old finish off the incredible one piece back was uncovered. The sound of the mandolin is deep, smooth with as good of a chop as you can get. Feel free to ask questions and it has a serviceable rectangle case. 12,500.00 thanks

Description:

I really don’t need 3 mandolins! Since I got my MT Oval my MT2 isn’t getting much playing time so I would like to find it a new home. It’s a 2002 with natural finish and gold hardware. This is an early MT2 with the original Gibson style tailpiece. The S/N is #209. The label reads MT2-H, which I believe, stood for “hard maple”. Collings shipped it on 10/22/2002. I bought it used from Gruhn Guitars 12/2005 and have never taken it out of the house. It’s in pristine condition. It’s always kept in the case and in a smoke free environment. Before shipping it to me, I did have a Gruhn repair person install a strap button on the treble side of the heal. It is otherwise unmodified. I just installed a fresh set of Thomastik-Infeld medium strings. I’m asking $2,550, which includes shipping via UPS Ground anywhere in the continental U.S. Contact me with questions and for pictures.

Very loud, responsive, and resonant F-5, rich tone, plays like butter. The best of the Bob Givens sound. Excellent condition -- a few minor dings but overall very clean. Rectangular TKL case. Selling because I'm playing less bluegrass these days and playing my Givens A-6 more instead. Givens F-5s are hard to find because people hang on to them -- play this for 10 seconds and you'll know why! Price reduced to $5800 plus shipping (in US) and insurance. Lots of photos on website. 48-hour approval is fine.

This is a 1940's vintage Tempo mandolin. All solid wood I have been trying to research the history of this instrument, but it seems that no one has any information on it. Believe it or not, I sold my 1936 Gibson A00 because I enjoyed it's deep rich woody tone so much. Now I have my eye on another mandolin. I find myself $250 short for it's purchase.Reluctintly, I must sell the Tempo. It comes with a pretty crappy chipboard case, but who cares $250 Shipping included anywhere in cont USA Thanks, Bruce.

Description:

I've wrestled with selling this mandolin for a few months now. I had it for sale, got a few nibbles but no serious offers, and then decided I'd hang onto it. But as much as I'd like to be, I'm just not a collector. And when I get too many instruments and some aren't getting played very much I think it's time they found a new caretaker.

I've raved about this mandolin on more than one occassion and it is a spectacular example of an oval hole mandolin. It has a deep, warm tone without being too tubby but it still crisp and loud enough to be heard in a jam. It offers a completely different tonal palette than an ff hole mandolin which makes it really fun to play with other mando pickers. There are several videos of me playing it at the above link.

Only the finest materials were used: Waverly tuners, James TP, red spruce top, sugar maple b/s, triple binding all around, understated inlay, Cumberland Acoustics pickguard. Will is no longer building oval holed instruments. There are only a handful of them out there and they rarely come up for sale.

This one is $4,395.00 shipped to your door in the lower 48 states in a shaped TKL case. An approval period will be agreed upon at the time of sale. If sent back, I'll refund your money less actual shipping and handling charges. Pics are available and I'd be happy to answer questions via email or a phone call. Trades considered, especially for an octave mandolin but I'm open to possibilities......

Thanks,
Shaun

Description:

I have a 1933 F2/4 for sale. The mandolin body is bound on the back like an F-4 but has the F-2 neck with no appointments. Finish is in very good shape, typical finish crazing. There is a small finish crack near the lower point which is typical of alot of mandolins with this age. The scroll on the headstock has been repaired at some time in the past. It looks to have been cracked but not completetly broken. There are some marks near the bridge placement where the bridge may have been moved around at some point. I believe all the hardware is original. The pickguard has deteriorated and is missing a small piece and the clamp has been reglued to the pickguard. The screw holding the pickguard is not original. The best part is the sound and playability, setup is great with a nice low action. It is a wonderful player instrument. Price on this unique instrument is $4350 plus shipping. The price includes an original Red Line case with a replacement handle. Additional pictures can be provided.

Description:

I have a recently restored vintage Silvestri bowl back mandolin for sale. '250.

The instrument dates to circa 1900 - but as you probably know is next to impossible to date precisely. Spruce top, rosewood back, neck and headstock vineer is nicely figured but not identified (cound be Spanish cedar?), butterfly inlay in bone+MOP+ebony.

Restoration is as follows:

* Two split seams and one minor crack in the bowl reglued, and reinforced with carbon-fibre cleats.
* One damaged area on the top (looks to have been a misplaced attempt by previous owner to scrub clean with water!!), very lightly sanded level, and filled with CA and then shellac.
* Back/kneck/headstock refinished (french polish, as per the original).
* Top sealed/finished in matte shellac - traditionally these were finished to look "unfinished", I've added just enough shellac to seal the wood, but hopefully not enough to be noticable, one consequence of this lightweight finishing is it's next to impossible to completely hide the previous top damage. Consider it "character" :-)
* Fingerboard leveled and refretted in nickel silver - frets are what is commonly refered to as "banjo" gauge - 1.35mm wide x 0.94mm high.
* One missing tuner has been replaced with a new one carved in bone - the originals were actually enameled, but unbleached bone made the closest match I could find - see photos.
* Added reproduction sleave-guard from faux-tortoiseshell, replaced felt string dampers etc.

Instrument has been set up with a low action (1.5mm at #12), fitted with lightweight Newtone nickel-wound strings, plays sweetly, and IMO has a great tone. It's also surprisingly loud - noticeably louder than my Eastman, though certainly still not in "banjo killer" territory. Still it is a bowlback :-)

There are more pictures available here: http://cittern.ning.com/photo/albums/silvestri-bowlback

You can also hear the instrument being played (rather badly - I still haven't figured out how to hold these things!) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eM6TIt6Uvo.

The not so small print:
* Personal pickups/inspection are welcome.
* Postage is at cost and will be insured.
* Overseas buyers are welcome - but if you live in a climate very different from the UK then you will have to be responsible for any setup adjustments needed. I'm confident the current setup should be rock solid for UK and northern European buyers, but those in more humid environments may experience issues given the low action - if in doubt we'll consult the mailing lists for advice!
* If for any reason you're not happy with the instrument please return prompty in original condition for a full refund - sorry excludes postage. In the event of damage/loss in transit please contact me ASAP so I can get onto the carrier and get things sorted out.

Feel free to PM me if you would like any more information/photos/sound samples etc.

John Maddock (aka "Tavy")

Description:

For sale by original owner: 1998 Newson F-5 (S/N F-52-498) purchased new in August 1998. It has a beautifully grained spruce top with curly maple sides, back and neck. The finish gives the maple surfaces a unique three-dimensional effect. The only modification made was to add a gold plated Allen cast tailpiece (the original Newson tailpiece in case). Currently strung with d'Addario EXP75s (extra set provided). It has a radiused fingerboard and the fingerboard extension is scooped out for better playability.

Speaking of playability, it has an awesome sound with excellent chop and bark. Perfect for the serious bluegrass musician. It was played by Mike Marshall and Chris Thile at Merlefest in 1989 and they were both very impressed (Chris offered to buy it from me right then). This instrument is now infrequently played and is in pristine condition. It comes in its original hard case (also in great shape). Reason for selling: I don't play mandolin much any more - and I want a Segway. Price is $4,900 plus shipping. No trades please (unless it's for a Segway I2 or X2). ;-) Call me at 919-266-5135 for more pictures or questions.

Description:

This is a wonderful sounding example of one of Corrado Giacomel's early hand made F5's from the early 2000's. It has a wonderfully balanced and refined tone, with lots of volume. It is X braced, has a radiused fretboard, and has a fantastic floating ebony pickguard. The woods are beautiful, it plays very easily, and you can hear why he is one of Italy's foremost luthiers. The tone is incredible, with warm woody lows, crisp mids and bell like high notes all the way up the neck. Comes with original shaped hard case. This would be great for a player or for a collector because he made so few. Other photos available on request. New lowered price 6000 or best offer. No trades please.

Here is your chance to get a Gibson F style...er A style...er F style...er I think it is confused about its identity! It is a Gibson A12. It plays well and sounds good for an A12. Comes with a pro setup and a hard shell case. It is better than most pac rim instruments...especially for the bucks...and it is a real Gibson.
